Have you ever wondered why companies pay millions of dollars for a 20 second commercial during the Super Bowl? Obviously, the answer is that this event reaches millions of viewers who are all prospective customers. When you are in a job search you need to market and advertise your own commercial. Unless you are out there increasing your professional and personal network, marketing yourself directly to hiring authorities and using at least four resources in your job search – you are NOT giving yourself a chance of obtaining a job offer. Some resources to consider- referrals, networking, a reputable, established executive search/recruiting firm, and a site such as linkedin. It is the squeaky wheel that gets oiled first! You can’t depend on one resource (for example: Job Boards) and expect great results. You resume cards are your brochure, your thirty second pitch is your commercial and your direct marketing calls are your sales presentations. You can accomplish all of these tasks and not spend a dime vs. the millions of dollars spend on TV Commercials. Also make sure that your LinkedIn profile is filled with recommendations from people who know your capabilities.

It is important for you to consider the benefits a company offers when you are interviewing and eventually receive a job offer. Many companies have either eliminated benefits or are not paying for them. In some cases, employers pay for the employee, but not their spouse or family. The cost of benefits must be considered in your job search process. Once you have interviewed, ask for a copy of their benefit package. The other option that is popular is acafeteria plan or flexible spending account. The employers provide a flat amount for each employee and then the employee can choose which benefits they prefer. If you are paying for a portion of your own benefits, it is also important to inquire whether they are pre-tax or post-tax. It is to your great advantage if benefits are paid pre-tax. An offer is not just a salary and start date, it is the entire compensation package including benefits.

It is important to customize your resume and cover letter toward a specific profession, industry or job title. Hiring authorities may not consider resumes that are too broad in scope! You don’t want to come across desperate and it’s important that the person reading your cover letter or resume understands the type of job you are seeking. They will not take time to attempt to figure it out and may eliminate you from consideration.

If you have more than one target, this does mean you will have more than one version of your resume and cover letter. In this case it’s important that you track which cover letter and resume you send to hiring authorities. It is more work, but it will provide you with better results.

For the first time in months, the numbers for new jobs created in the month of January was much higher than anticipated. I understand if you are still not working, these numbers may not excite you. However, it is proof employers are hiring. If you are not obtaining results or scheduling interviews, you may need to change the way you are conducting your search. Too often, job seekers spend most of their time on their computer. Starting today, delay applying for jobs on Job Boards or websites until after dinner. Applying to Job Boards should not represent more than 10% of your job search efforts. During the day, make personal contacts, telephone calls, book informational interviews, network, volunteer your time, attend job fairs and attend any event that will get you in front of potential employers. You have the best chance of reaching decision makers and obtaining names during the hours of 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Hopefully in the not too distant future, you will be included in the number of newly employed job seekers!

Take time today to review your resume and your cover letter. If you were a hiring authority, would you clearly understand the opportunities you are pursuing? Is it clear what industry or profession you are targeting? Would you be impressed by the accomplishments you have achieved and the impact they have had on past employers?

Most employers will not take time to figure out where you would fit into their organization. Your resume and cover letter should provide them with that information. It is important to understand that an unclear resume may create confusion. If an individual screening resumes is confused by your paperwork, they may just move on to the next resume on the stack. Your resume is either a ticket to an interview or it is screening you out. If you are not able to schedule interviews, chances are you need to revise your resume and/or cover letter.

It is also important to have a focused target. If you are open to everything, you probably won’t get anything. Employers want to know that you have targeted their company and opportunity because you have a high level of interest in working for them. They need to sense your high level of confident that you can do a great job for them. If you were a hiring authority, would you schedule an interview based on your current resume and cover letter? If you answer is NO, it may be time to revise your resume.

Ask yourself each day, “How can I schedule an interview or an informational interview today?” The more you interview, the greater your chances become of finding that perfect opportunity!

If you are not getting the results you want from telephone conversations, interviews or follow up calls, it may be time to record yourself. Think of the times when a family member has called you and immediately asks you “what’s wrong?”, because they picked up something in your voice. Something as simple as smiling when you talk can project a different impression on the phone. It may not be what you’re saying that is preventing you from finding a job – it could be how you’re saying it.

Hiring authorities want to hire job seekers who are competent, confident, convincing, interested and enthusiastic. When you listen to a recorded conversation of yourself, would you use any of those words to describe the impression you made? Much of the initial communication in a job search is achieved through the use of email. When you leave a voice mail, it is often the first impression of your verbal communication skills and personality. If you received a voice mail from yourself, would you return the call? In your voice mail message did you show the hiring authority how they would benefit by calling you back – or was your message self-serving?

Never underestimate the importance of good verbal communication skills. Record yourself, make corrections and then re-record yourself until you are satisfied with the impression you make. This is one of the quickest ways to improve the results you will achieve in your job search.

For those who are out of work, there is usually a burst of activity in the first few weeks as networks are built up and resumes are updated. Then, by around the third month or so, fatigue begins to set in. After the inevitable dead ends and politely worded rejection e-mails, it begins to sink in that the average time it takes to find a new job in this economy is about six months–and you’re only halfway there.

If you don’t believe you’re ever going to get a job, no one is going to want to take a chance on hiring you. Giving in to the depression some people feel after an extended job search will only guarantee that your unemployment will continue.

╖ Do things that make you feel good about yourself. Take a long look in the mirror and ask yourself, “What is it about me that makes me good at what I do?” Make a list of your favorite qualities, such as sense of humor or compassion, Naiman says, and find ways to make use of those skills and characteristics. For example, she says, if you’re a true planner, organize a book drive at your child’s school. If you have a gift for empathizing, volunteer to work with families of patients in a hospital waiting room.

╖ Aim for tangible results. Because many job search activities can leave you hanging around, waiting for responses, try to do something each day that leads to a measurable outcome. After you’ve made your daily contacts, try organizing your office, cleaning out the garage or doing other home improvement projects, Naiman says. Perhaps you could write entries for a neighborhood newsletter or enter your thoughts about your job search on a blog. “Make sure that, at the end of each day, you can point to something you accomplished,” she says.

╖ Surround yourself with supportive people. Sometimes your mood can be altered by the company you keep. If many of your acquaintances are “glass-half-empty” people, who constantly bemoan the state of the economy, don’t allow them to drain your energy, she says. Identify those friends and colleagues who have confidence in you and who can help build up your own all-important self-confidence.

╖ Reward yourself. Each day, the brain needs to download the stress that builds up. Be sure to take some time to unwind with a good book, a soak in the tub or some other soothing activity. “Pride yourself on the things you accomplished that day, rather than waiting for results before you celebrate what you’ve done,” she adds. “The latter usually doesn’t come as quickly as you would wish.”

╖ Don’t hide your feelings. It’s one thing to be optimistic; it’s quite another to blind yourself with an unrealistic, Pollyanna attitude. Since we all can’t be upbeat 24/7, “give yourself permission” to have an occasional bad day, Naiman says. “If you diligently follow the above suggestions, you can count on tomorrow to be better,” she adds.
